BE DELIBERATE: LOVE YOURSELF

I spoke to this matter recently and was very enlightened to realise while preparing how important it is to love yourself.

Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. 38 This is the first and great commandment. 39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. 40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

Matthew 22:37-40 (KJV)

We see God’s Word from the above text highlighting the extent to which we must and can fulfil the second most important law to God. Which is ‘loving your neighbour as thyself’.

Truth is that we cannot give what we don’t have. If we do not have enough love for ourselves, how can we love others. It goes to show or confirm the possibility that the reason why people are not able to love others, may be because they have failed in loving themselves.

What does it mean to love yourself ? What is self love ? It is likely that when we answer this questions, we may be able to answer many more questions.

Love by itself is the extension and expression of value, sacrifice and commitment especially towards another. Love is the acknowledgement of value. Love is knowledge without contempt of a person or thing.

Self love here will then mean channeling the application of all the definitions to one’s self.

Most times, the term love highlights the need for it to be expressed or extended to someone else. But in this study we attempt to focus all of the magnificence of the love definition to ourselves for a moment.

To practice self love as it is also called means you learn to treat yourself with some form of regard. Learning to prioritise yourself in scheme of things. Learning to give yourself some permission to be less judgmental on yourself. Reposing some more confident and trust in yourself. Generally just being nice to yourself.

It is my understanding that love is expressed in three fundamental acts. Giving, Forgiving and Sacrifice.

It therefore goes without a doubt, we need to be more generous towards ourselves, forgiving of ourselves when we make mistakes and making sacrifices to and with ourselves. In other words self care.

Here I suggest a few ideas of how to love on yourself and to demonstrate the right self care, which ultimately becomes your self esteem from which we live and give our lives.

  1. Being Mindful of Yourself: You need to be intentional and very deliberate about what you think, feel or prefer. Being in touch with yourself is a good way to practise Self Care.
  2. Taking Needs over Wants: Here you would be required to stay focused on real needs over flimsy wants. You will find the chance to be rationale in your actions and careful consideration.
  3. Healthy Habits: Sound nutrition, good sleep, exercise, productive engagements, meaningful moments point to some of the things that affirm self love to us.

Summarily, self love improves your self esteem. Do not wait for anyone’s permission or compliment before taking out time to love and believe in yourself.

Love thy neighbour as thyself…And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise.

Luke 6:31 (KJV)

Be blessed and Please Remain God’s Pride! Amen!
